Our family has had a love of Stradbroke Island that goes back to 1985 when we relocated from Melbourne to Brisbane. We instituted a family tradition of Christmas on Stradbroke Island every decade commencing in 1990.
We have a half interest in a unit at Samarinda with one of our daughters. It is a delightfully located unit at Point Lookout with a view that embraces the Surf Club and Main Beach. If you have not had a holiday on “Straddie” you need to put it on your bucket list. The gorge walk at Point Lookout is magical. The high elevation of the walking track allows viewing into the crystal-clear waters below. Dependent upon the season you will be rewarded with sightings of turtles, manta rays, whales, dolphins, sharks and fish. It is now winter and there are many sightings of breaching whales on their northern migration.
I along with one of my daughters have a keen interest in birds and there is a rich and diverse number of species on the island.
It is a great place to chill out, eat some seafood and do some writing. I was once a keen fisherman but now I leave it to the experts and buy it from the professional fishermen. I recommend some tailor. Lightly floured and fried on the BBQ with a salad. Also, some sand crab sandwiches with some vinegar and a cleansing ale followed by an afternoon doze, nothing better! KISS principal in cooking, simple is good.
